Sociology

Sociology is the discipline that asks how human societies are structured, why inequalities persist, and what forces drive social change. In a world facing climate change, mass migration, economic upheaval, precarity, and the rise of populist movements, the questions that sociology addresses have never been more urgent. It provides the theoretical frameworks and empirical methods to understand not just what is happening in society, but why, and what might be done differently.

At Swansea University, this four-year programme engages directly with the major challenges of our time: the ecological instability driven by climate change, the deindustrialisation and changes to working life that economic shifts have produced, and the social and political consequences of rapid change for communities and individuals. You will develop a sociological imagination that allows you to see the connections between personal experiences and broader social forces, studying theory and research in equal measure and developing the analytical, critical, and communication skills that the discipline demands. The four-year structure of the Welsh degree gives additional depth and breadth to your studies.

Sociology graduates go on to careers across a very wide range of fields. Social research, policy analysis, social work, community development, public administration, journalism, education, human resources, housing, health services, and the voluntary sector all value the analytical and communication skills sociology develops. The ability to understand complex social phenomena and to communicate that understanding clearly is applicable wherever human institutions and social forces are in contact with real people's lives.

Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, criminology, social work, or related fields, while others move directly into professional roles in the public, private, and charitable sectors.
