Sociology asks fundamental questions about the society we live in: why inequality persists, how institutions shape behaviour, what binds communities together and what tears them apart, and how social change happens. It is a discipline that takes seriously both the big structural forces of class, race, and gender and the small-scale interactions through which social life is produced every day. As a sociology student you learn to look beneath the surface of what seems obvious and to question assumptions that are usually left unexamined.

At Northumbria this three-year full-time degree develops your ability to think sociologically and to deploy the research methods, both qualitative and quantitative, that allow social scientists to produce credible evidence. You will engage with the major theoretical traditions in sociology alongside more applied topics in areas such as crime, health, identity, work, and digital culture. The programme includes a sandwich year, giving you the opportunity to spend a substantial period in a professional setting and to connect your academic understanding to real-world organisations and challenges.

A year abroad is also available, allowing you to experience a different society directly and to bring that cross-cultural perspective back into your final year. Work placement activity is built into the programme throughout.

Sociology graduates are found across a remarkably wide range of careers because the skills the degree develops, critical thinking, research, communication, and the ability to understand complex social situations, are genuinely transferable. Common destinations include social research, public policy, local government, charity and voluntary sector work, health and social care management, human resources, journalism, and community development. Postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, criminology, or social research methods is a well-trodden path for those who want to deepen their expertise or move into academic research.
