Sociology

Sociology is the scientific study of society, examining how the social structures, institutions, and processes that organise collective life shape the experiences, identities, and choices of individuals and groups. It asks why inequalities persist, how gender, race, class, and other social categories influence life chances, how culture and institutions reproduce themselves over time, and how social change occurs. It is a discipline that demands both rigorous empirical analysis and sophisticated theoretical thinking, and one that develops a capacity to see beyond common-sense explanations to the structural forces that shape human behaviour.

At the University of York this three-year full-time programme invites you to discover how society is shaped and how it shapes you. You will examine how technologies, gender relations, cultural forces, and institutional structures influence identities, choices, and actions, engaging with both classical sociological theory and contemporary empirical research. You will develop strong qualitative and quantitative research skills, learning to analyse social life through a range of methods.

The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience and international perspective alongside your academic development.

Sociology graduates work in an exceptionally wide range of sectors. Social research, policy analysis, community and youth work, social care, human resources, education, journalism, marketing, healthcare, and the voluntary sector are all common career destinations. The analytical and research skills developed through sociology are transferable across any professional context where understanding people and social systems matters.

Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in sociology, social policy, criminology, or related disciplines, developing specialist expertise for research or professional careers.
