Sociology with Criminology

Sociology with criminology is a combination that brings the broad analytical tools of sociology to bear on the specific questions raised by crime, deviance, policing and the criminal justice system. Sociology is concerned with the forces that shape society and social life, examining how power, inequality, culture, institutions and social change affect the way people live. Criminology applies sociological and other social science perspectives to the study of crime, asking why it occurs, who commits it and is victimised by it, how it is responded to by the state and society, and what the experience of the criminal justice system means for those who pass through it.

At the University of Leicester, this three-year programme explores the forces shaping society alongside the roots of crime, developing your analytical skills and critical perspective across both disciplines. You will develop a thorough understanding of sociological theory and research methods alongside specialist knowledge of criminological perspectives, criminal justice institutions, policing, punishment and victimology. A year abroad gives you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution and engage with comparative approaches to crime and justice in a different national context.

Graduates in sociology with criminology pursue careers in the criminal justice system, including probation, prison and court services, in policing, social work, youth justice, policy research, NGOs working with offenders and victims, education, community development and journalism. The analytical and research skills developed through the combined programme are valued across the public, voluntary and private sectors. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in criminology, social policy, social work, law or a related field, which is often necessary for specialist professional or research roles in the criminal justice area.
