Sociology is the discipline that examines how societies are organised, how inequalities are produced and reproduced, and how cultural forces, political structures, and economic conditions shape the lives of individuals and communities. At York St John University, this part-time degree deepens your understanding of contemporary society through the study of social theory, encouraging you to investigate the challenges societies face and to engage seriously with topical social and cultural issues. You will examine existing and emerging social divisions and identities through a range of theoretical frameworks, developing critical reflection on popular media and social discourses alongside an empirical understanding of how social structures function and change. The programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year, a year abroad option, and work placements, all of which add professional and international dimensions to your sociological education.
