Software engineering is the systematic discipline of designing, building, and testing software that is reliable, maintainable, and fit for purpose. It goes beyond programming as a craft to address the full life cycle of software development, including requirements analysis, system architecture, team collaboration, version control, testing strategies, and the management of complexity in large codebases. At Sheffield Hallam University, this programme includes a foundation year, providing a structured academic and technical preparation for students entering from a range of backgrounds. In the main degree, you will learn to design, implement, and test complex, high-quality software applications, developing proficiency in major programming languages and frameworks. The programme also includes a sandwich placement year and a work placement, giving you substantial real-world software development experience before graduation and ensuring that your academic learning is grounded in professional practice.

The full programme runs over four years full-time including the foundation year, or three years for the main degree.
