About this course

Software engineering is the discipline of designing, developing, and maintaining software systems with the rigour and professionalism that complex, large-scale software demands. It goes beyond programming to address the full lifecycle of software products: requirements analysis, system architecture, design patterns, testing, quality assurance, project management, and the maintenance and evolution of software over time. The discipline emerged from the recognition that writing software that actually works reliably, at scale, and in collaboration with others is a fundamentally different challenge from writing small programs that solve simple problems.

At the University of Leicester, this three-year full-time programme combines technical programming expertise with real-world experience, developing your ability to shape the way people interact with technology at the highest professional levels. You will study software design and architecture, algorithms and data structures, software testing and quality, operating systems, databases, and the professional and ethical dimensions of software engineering practice. The course includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement, meaning that you spend significant time in professional software engineering environments before you complete your studies, developing the practical skills and professional networks that set you apart in the graduate market.

Graduates from software engineering programmes go on to careers as software engineers, software developers, systems architects, technical leads, and engineering managers across every sector that depends on software, which is to say almost every sector of the modern economy. The combination of technical depth and professional experience that this programme provides is particularly valued by employers. Further study at postgraduate level in software engineering, computer science, AI, or cybersecurity is available for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to visit …

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the city is a bri…
