Spanish and Czech

Spanish and Czech (with Slovak) is an unusual and intellectually rich language combination, pairing one of the world's most widely spoken Romance languages with two closely related West Slavic languages. Spanish opens access to twenty countries across three continents, to an extraordinarily rich literary tradition from Cervantes to Borges, and to one of the world's most significant geopolitical and commercial language communities. Czech and Slovak, while distinct languages, are mutually intelligible to a high degree, and studying Czech gives you effective access to both, as well as to the cultural and historical heritage of Central Europe, including the remarkable Czech literary and intellectual tradition and the complex histories of the former Czechoslovakia.

Oxford's four-year full-time programme is taught within a department renowned for its breadth and depth of linguistic expertise. You will develop proficiency in Spanish to an advanced level, engaging with Iberian and Latin American literature, history, and culture, and you will build proficiency in Czech from whatever level you begin. Slovak is included as a language closely associated with Czech, deepening your linguistic range across the Slavic family.

Oxford's tutorial system places you in regular direct intellectual exchange with specialist academics, who will push you to engage rigorously with primary texts, develop independent arguments, and refine your understanding through close discussion. You will read literature and non-literary material in the original in each language, situating texts within their historical and cultural contexts.
