Spanish and English studied together at the University of Westminster develops your linguistic competence in Spanish to a high level while also deepening your critical understanding of English language, literature and cultural contexts. Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world by native speakers, with an enormous and culturally diverse community of speakers spread across Europe, Latin America and the growing Hispanic population of the United States. Engaging seriously with the Spanish-speaking world, through its literature, film, history and contemporary society, is to gain access to a cultural richness that monolingual education can only partially reach.

This three-year programme develops your language skills through intensive teaching in reading, writing, listening and speaking, alongside engagement with Spanish and Latin American cultural and literary traditions. Westminster's particular emphasis on employability means the programme is designed to prepare you to communicate as a competent and professional linguist in real-world graduate contexts, not just to pass examinations. A sandwich year provides a substantial period of professional experience, and work placements and a year abroad are built in, giving you immersive experience in a Spanish-speaking country and real professional exposure to how linguistic skills are applied in working environments.

The English dimension of the degree deepens your analytical engagement with language and literature in both a comparative and a self-reflective way.

Graduates are well placed for careers in translation and interpreting, international business, diplomacy, journalism and media, publishing, education, cultural organisations and NGOs with Latin American or Spanish connections. The combination of English language analytical skills and Spanish fluency is valuable in any role that bridges the Anglophone and Hispanic worlds. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in translation, linguistics, literature or area studies, while others move directly into professional roles.
