Spanish and Modern Greek

Spanish is the second most widely spoken native language in the world, and Modern Greek connects students to one of Europe's richest and most historically significant cultures, from ancient Athens to the contemporary literature and politics of modern Greece and Cyprus. Studying these two languages together at Oxford means engaging with a remarkably diverse set of literary traditions, historical periods, cultural contexts and linguistic structures, and developing the analytical and communicative depth that serious language study demands.

Over four years, you will study both languages to an advanced level, reading literature and cultural texts in Spanish and Modern Greek, examining the history and politics of the Spanish-speaking world and of Greece, and developing your linguistic accuracy and fluency through translation, essay writing and oral work. Oxford's tutorial system places you in close intellectual conversation with specialists in both fields, pressing you to develop and defend your own interpretations of texts and ideas. The programme combines rigorous literary and cultural analysis with genuine linguistic skill, and you will engage with works ranging from medieval Spanish narrative to contemporary Greek fiction.

Graduates in Spanish and Modern Greek pursue careers in diplomacy, international organisations, translation and interpreting, academia, journalism, publishing, law, finance, and the many sectors where knowledge of languages and cultures provides a decisive advantage. The combination of southern European and eastern Mediterranean expertise is relatively rare and highly valued in international contexts. Many graduates continue to postgraduate work in linguistics, literary studies, area studies or translation, and some pursue doctoral research in fields connected to one or both traditions.
