Spanish and Swedish

Spanish and Swedish together open access to two linguistic communities that are different in almost every dimension but each of great significance. Spanish is spoken as a first language by around half a billion people across Spain, Latin America, and beyond, and carries literary traditions of extraordinary richness from the medieval romance through to the twentieth-century boom novel and contemporary Latin American fiction. Swedish belongs to the North Germanic family and is the language of one of Europe's most socially progressive and internationally engaged societies, with a literature, film culture, and intellectual tradition that has exerted disproportionate global influence for a country of its size.
