Spanish is the second most widely spoken language by native speakers in the world, the official language of more than twenty countries across Europe and the Americas, and a key medium of literary, musical, and cultural production across five centuries of remarkable richness. Studying Spanish at university means developing genuine linguistic fluency alongside deep engagement with the histories, literatures, and cultures of Spain and Latin America, two distinct but interrelated civilisations whose influence on the modern world can hardly be overstated. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time MA (Hons) programme develops your Spanish to a high level of proficiency while offering a wide range of course options that reflect the breadth of Spanish-language culture. You will study literature from the Golden Age through to contemporary writing from both Spain and Latin America, engage with the history and politics of the Spanish-speaking world, and explore film, translation, and other cultural forms.
