About this course

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world by native speakers and the official tongue of over twenty countries across Europe and the Americas. Studying it to a high level opens access to one of the richest and most varied literary and cultural traditions in any language, from the medieval ballad to the Golden Age drama, from the Latin American boom to contemporary fiction and film. Geography, meanwhile, examines the physical and human worlds and the complex interactions between them, asking how places, landscapes, environments and societies are shaped by both natural processes and human choices.

At the University of St Andrews this four-year full-time programme develops your Spanish language and communication skills to a high level of proficiency alongside substantive study of the rich cultural heritage of Spain and Latin America. You will be able to choose from a broad range of options in Spanish, including literature from the Golden Age to the present day, cultural history, film and translation. The geography strand gives you a complementary analytical toolkit, developing your understanding of the physical and human dimensions of the world in ways that interact productively with the cross-cultural perspective that language study cultivates.

A year abroad gives you the opportunity to live and study in a Spanish-speaking environment, which is transformative both linguistically and personally.

Graduates with this combination are well placed for careers in international development, environmental consultancy, journalism, education, cultural organisations, geography-related public sector roles, the civil service, and international business in Spanish-speaking markets. Many pursue postgraduate study in geography, environmental management, Hispanic studies, international development or education, and the linguistic and analytical skills developed support a wide range of further pathways.
