About this course

Sport and exercise psychology is concerned with the mental and psychological factors that influence performance, participation, and wellbeing in sport and physical activity. It draws on both psychology and sport science to understand motivation, confidence, concentration, anxiety, team dynamics, and the psychological aspects of injury and recovery. As the role of mental skills in athletic performance has become better understood, sport psychologists have become an increasingly valued part of professional and elite sport environments.

At Southampton Solent University this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, giving you a structured introduction to the scientific and psychological foundations of the subject before you move into the main degree. You will study psychological theory and research methods alongside applied content covering topics such as performance enhancement, mental skills training, group cohesion, coach-athlete relationships, and the psychology of physical activity and health. The programme connects academic understanding to practical application, developing your ability to work with athletes and coaches as well as to analyse research.

The degree also covers the wider contexts in which sport and exercise psychology operates, including physical education, community sport, health promotion, and exercise referral. You will develop the research skills needed to evaluate evidence critically and to contribute to knowledge in the field.

Graduates go on to careers in sport performance support, coaching, sports development, health and wellbeing roles, fitness and leisure management, and physical education. Those who want to practise as chartered sport and exercise psychologists typically require further postgraduate training and supervised practice, but the degree provides a strong foundation for that route. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in sport psychology, sport science, or health psychology.

Highly recommend
I was sceptical before starting β€” now I'd recommend it to anyone. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” local cost of l…

Genuinely worthwhile
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” local cost of living is mana…
