About this course

Sport and exercise science is the application of scientific principles to understanding human physical performance and the role of exercise in health. It draws on physiology, psychology, biomechanics, and nutrition to investigate how the body functions under physical stress, how training drives adaptation, and how sport and physical activity contribute to both performance and wellbeing across the lifespan. The discipline has two broad orientations: performance, concerned with helping athletes train more effectively and compete more successfully; and health, concerned with using exercise as a tool for preventing and managing chronic disease, extending healthy life, and improving quality of life at the population level.

At Leeds Beckett this three-year full-time degree is endorsed by the Chartered Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences, reflecting its commitment to professional standards in the field. You will study the major scientific disciplines of sport and exercise science in depth, combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on laboratory work that develops your practical analytical skills. The programme blends behavioural, physical, and life sciences, giving you the integrative perspective that sport and exercise science requires.

A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement experience are all built into the programme, providing professional experience in real sporting or health environments and broadening your academic and cultural horizons.

Graduates move into careers in sport science and performance analysis with professional clubs, national governing bodies, and sport institutes, as well as in exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, sport coaching, public health and community sport, and health promotion roles. Many go on to postgraduate study to develop specialist expertise or to pursue accreditation as a sport and exercise scientist.
