About this course

Sport and exercise science applies the principles of physiology, biomechanics, and psychology to understand how the human body responds to physical activity and how that understanding can be used to improve performance, health, and wellbeing. It is a discipline that sits at the intersection of biology and applied science, and its relevance extends from the training of elite athletes to the design of physical activity interventions for people managing chronic health conditions. The growth of professional sport and the public health agenda around physical activity have both contributed to making this one of the more dynamic applied science fields.

At Salford this three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of the physiological, biomechanical, and psychological dimensions of sport and exercise. You will study how the cardiovascular, respiratory, and muscular systems respond to training, how movement patterns can be analysed and optimised, and how psychological factors influence performance and participation. Laboratory work, fitness testing, and practical investigation are central to the programme, giving you the opportunity to develop both your scientific understanding and your technical skills in applied sport science contexts.

The programme is designed for students who want to work with athletes, support community health initiatives, or pursue careers in performance and lifestyle enhancement. You will develop the scientific literacy to evaluate evidence about sport and exercise, the practical skills to conduct assessments and design training programmes, and the ability to communicate your findings to athletes, coaches, and other health professionals.

Graduates move into careers in performance sport, strength and conditioning, sport development, health and fitness, physical education, exercise referral, and research. Many continue to postgraduate study in sport science, strength and conditioning, physical therapy, or public health, or go on to professional qualifications in areas such as sports medicine or physiotherapy.
