Sport and Exercise Science
Sport and exercise science is the systematic study of how the human body responds and adapts to physical activity, exercise, and sport. It brings together physiology, biomechanics, and psychology, examining the physiological mechanisms that support physical performance, the mechanical principles that determine how we move, and the psychological factors that influence motivation, performance under pressure, and behaviour change. At the University of Suffolk this part-time programme develops your understanding of exercise physiology, including the role of nutrition in performance and health, alongside biomechanics and sport psychology. You will engage with research methods and the scientific evidence base that underpins applied practice in sport and exercise settings, developing the analytical skills needed to evaluate evidence and apply it appropriately. The part-time format allows you to study while balancing other professional or personal commitments, which is particularly valuable for those who are already working in sport, fitness, or health settings.
Graduates from sport and exercise science programmes work as sport scientists, strength and conditioning coaches, sports therapists, physical activity coordinators, and health and fitness professionals in sport clubs, gyms, NHS settings, community health organisations, and performance institutions. The range of applications is wide: from elite athlete support to population-level physical activity promotion. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in sports science, strength and conditioning, physiotherapy, or physical education, particularly those who wish to work in clinical or high-performance contexts that require additional specialist qualifications.
