About this course

Sport and exercise science applies the methods and knowledge of the natural sciences to the study of human physical performance, health, and the physiological and psychological responses to exercise. It is a discipline that draws on physiology, biomechanics, psychology, nutrition, and anatomy to ask fundamental questions about how the body works during physical activity, what limits human performance, how exercise affects health across the lifespan, and how training can be designed to produce specific adaptations. The answers matter not only to athletes and coaches but to public health, clinical rehabilitation, and the growing sport and fitness industry.

At the University of Northampton, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, which provides a preparatory stage for students entering from a range of educational backgrounds, building the scientific knowledge and study skills the degree requires before you begin the main programme. Throughout the degree you will develop practical and laboratory skills alongside theoretical understanding, using physiological testing, motion capture, psychological assessment, and performance analysis tools as part of your normal study. The programme is designed to develop both the scientific knowledge and the professional competencies that careers in sport, exercise, and health require.

You will study exercise physiology, sport biomechanics, sport psychology, motor control and learning, research methods, and the application of these to practical performance and health contexts. Scientific writing, data analysis, and the ability to evaluate research critically are developed throughout the degree, culminating in an independent research project in the final year.

Graduates in sport and exercise science work in a range of settings including professional sport as performance analysts, strength and conditioning coaches, or sports scientists embedded within teams, as well as in health and fitness, corporate wellness, rehabilitation, and the NHS. Teaching at secondary level via a PGCE is another route, and the degree provides a strong platform for postgraduate study in physiotherapy, nutrition, strength and conditioning, or research in exercise physiology. The foundation year route at Northampton makes this degree accessible to students who are passionate about the subject but need to build their scientific foundation first.
