About this course

Sport and exercise science applies biological, psychological and biomechanical principles to understand human physical performance and the relationship between exercise and health. It asks how the body responds and adapts to training, how mental factors influence athletic performance, how movement can be analysed to improve technique and reduce injury, and how physical activity can be prescribed to support wellbeing across the whole population. The discipline spans elite sport and public health, and graduates can work in both performance-focused and community settings.

At York St John University, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, a sandwich year in professional placement, a year abroad and a work placement, giving you a richly structured and experientially grounded education. You will develop skills across physiology, biomechanics and sport psychology, learning to apply scientific principles to athletic performance and to the design of exercise programmes for diverse populations. The programme is delivered in specialist facilities that allow you to develop practical competence alongside your theoretical understanding, working with real athletes and exercisers in settings that prepare you for professional practice.

Graduates from sport and exercise science programmes work as strength and conditioning coaches, sport scientists, performance analysts, exercise physiologists, fitness professionals and health coaches. Many find roles within elite sport, working with professional clubs, national governing bodies and high-performance centres. Others work in community sport, health promotion, rehabilitation and the corporate wellness sector.

The research and analytical skills developed through the degree are also valuable in sport technology, sports medicine and public health policy. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in sport science, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning or physical education, which provides specialist preparation for advanced roles.
