Sport Coaching

Sport coaching is the professional practice of developing athletes and teams, combining knowledge of sport science, pedagogy, psychology, and leadership to help individuals and groups improve their performance, enjoyment, and wellbeing through sport and physical activity. Coaches operate at every level, from community grassroots settings and school sport through to elite performance environments, and the best coaches draw on deep technical knowledge of their sport, strong interpersonal skills, and an understanding of how people learn and develop physically and psychologically.

At the University of the West of Scotland, this four-year full-time programme develops your understanding of coaching across these dimensions. You will study the physical sciences underpinning sport, including exercise physiology, biomechanics, and sports psychology, alongside coaching pedagogy, talent development, leadership, and the analysis of performance. You will develop practical coaching skills across a range of sports and settings, learning to plan and deliver sessions, to observe and give feedback effectively, and to adapt your approach to different athletes and contexts.

The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to experience sport coaching in a different cultural and sporting environment, broadening your professional perspective and developing the adaptability that effective coaches need. The four-year Scottish degree structure gives you the time to develop genuine expertise before you graduate.

You will develop communication, leadership, planning, and analytical skills alongside your coaching knowledge, making you genuinely versatile in sports and other professional settings.

Graduates go on to careers as coaches, performance analysts, sport development officers, physical education teachers, personal trainers, and sport science support practitioners. Many work in professional and semi-professional sport, community sport, or education. Postgraduate study in sport coaching, sport science, or physical education is a natural route for those wishing to specialise or pursue academic work.
