Sport, Fitness and Coaching
Sport, fitness and coaching brings together the science of physical performance, the principles of health and wellbeing, and the practical craft of helping others develop through structured activity. Sport and exercise science examines how the body responds to physical demands, drawing on physiology, biomechanics, psychology, and nutrition to understand performance, recovery, and the long-term health benefits of active lifestyles. Coaching adds a human dimension, exploring how to motivate and develop athletes and participants at every level, from community sport to high-performance environments, through evidence-based methods and strong interpersonal skills.
At the Open University you will study this programme part time through distance learning, making it accessible wherever you are and whatever your other commitments. The distance learning format is particularly well suited to this subject area, as many students are already working in sport, fitness, coaching, or related fields and want to develop their knowledge alongside their practice. You will study the physiological and biomechanical principles that underpin physical performance, the psychological dimensions of motivation and behaviour change, the principles of programme design for different populations, and the theories and practices of coaching and leadership in sport.
The flexible delivery means you can structure your studies around your work and personal life, progressing at a pace that suits you.
Graduates from sport, fitness, and coaching programmes work across the sector in roles as personal trainers, fitness instructors, community sport coaches, athletic development coaches, sports development officers, and sport and exercise scientists. Many use the degree to progress from practitioner roles into management or leadership positions within sports organisations, leisure trusts, schools, and national governing bodies. The programme is also strong preparation for further professional qualifications in coaching, personal training, or sport science, as well as postgraduate study in sport and exercise science, sports coaching, or related health and wellbeing disciplines.
