Sport Rehabilitation

Sport rehabilitation is a clinical discipline that supports people to recover from musculoskeletal injuries and return to physical activity and sport. Sport rehabilitators assess injury, design and deliver evidence-based rehabilitation programmes, manage return to play, and advise on injury prevention. They work across a wide range of settings, from professional sport environments to NHS physiotherapy departments, private practice, and community sport and fitness organisations.

At the University of the West of England, Bristol, this three-year full-time programme prepares you for a career as a sport rehabilitator working with people of all ages and all backgrounds. You will develop knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and clinical assessment alongside the practical skills of exercise therapy, manual therapy, taping and strapping, and rehabilitation programme design. The programme develops your clinical reasoning, communication skills, and professional judgement, preparing you to work safely and effectively in a range of clinical environments.

The variety of potential settings, including the NHS, Ministry of Defence, private practice, and professional sport, reflects the genuine breadth of the profession.

Graduates from sport rehabilitation programmes work in professional sports clubs, physiotherapy practices, NHS trusts, private rehabilitation clinics, the armed forces, and community sport and leisure organisations. Many pursue membership of the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers, which is the relevant professional body, and registration as Allied Health Professionals through the HCPC. Further study at postgraduate level in sports rehabilitation, physiotherapy, or related clinical areas is available for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or advance to more senior clinical roles.
