About this course

Sport science and mathematics is an unusual and practically powerful combination that applies rigorous quantitative thinking to the science of human physical performance. Sport science draws on physiology, psychology, and biomechanics to understand how athletes train, perform, and recover, while mathematics provides the statistical methods, modelling tools, and analytical frameworks that give scientific investigations their rigour and that are increasingly central to performance analysis, data-driven coaching, and the quantitative research that underpins evidence-based practice in sport.

Nottingham Trent University's three-year full-time degree develops your knowledge in both disciplines simultaneously, giving you the scientific grounding in sport and exercise alongside the mathematical depth to analyse data and build models with confidence. You will study exercise physiology, sport psychology, biomechanics, nutrition, strength and conditioning, statistics, calculus, linear algebra, data analysis, mathematical modelling, and computational methods. The combination prepares you to contribute to performance science at a level that goes beyond descriptive statistics to genuine mathematical analysis, a capability that is increasingly valued as sport organisations invest in data analytics and performance technology.

Graduates from sport science and mathematics programmes go on to work as performance analysts, sport scientists, data analysts in professional sport, strength and conditioning coaches, and researchers in exercise science or sport technology. The mathematical skills the degree develops are also valued in health analytics, fitness technology companies, and the growing field of sports betting and fantasy sports analytics. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in sport science, applied statistics, data science, or performance analysis, and some pursue doctoral research in sport or exercise science.

A great decision
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” local c…

Genuinely worthwhile
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, first-year classes can be quite large. On the city β€” good transport links make it easy to visit other UK cit…
