Sport Science for Health
Sport science for health applies the methods and knowledge of sport and exercise science to the promotion of health, wellbeing and physical activity across different populations. Where performance-focused sport science concentrates on optimising the bodies of competitive athletes, sport science for health asks how physical activity can be used more broadly to improve the quality of life of people with a wide range of needs, from young people developing physical literacy to adults rehabilitating after injury or illness and older adults managing chronic conditions. The field draws on anatomy, physiology, nutrition, psychology and public health.
At Anglia Ruskin University's Writtle campus, this three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of anatomy, physiology, nutrition and the promotion of active lifestyles. You will explore lifelong engagement in physical activity and exercise, including physical literacy development in youth and exercise rehabilitation for adults with specific needs. The programme balances scientific knowledge with practical application, preparing you to design and deliver exercise programmes and to understand the physiological and psychological factors that determine how different people respond to physical activity.

Graduates of sport science for health programmes pursue careers in exercise prescription and referral, health and fitness management, personal training, community health promotion, cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation, NHS physical activity roles, sports and leisure management, health coaching and teaching. Many graduates continue to further professional qualifications in areas such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy or strength and conditioning, where the sport science foundation provides excellent preparation. Further study at master's level in exercise science, public health, sport rehabilitation or a related health science is also an option for those drawn to research or specialist clinical careers.
