Sports and Exercise Therapy

Sports and exercise therapy is the clinical practice of preventing injury, managing acute musculoskeletal conditions, and supporting the rehabilitation of athletes and physically active people. It draws on anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and rehabilitation science to develop practitioners who can assess injury, devise treatment plans, and deliver evidence-based therapeutic interventions. The discipline sits close to physiotherapy and sports medicine, with a specific focus on the physically active population and the sports environment.

At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year full-time programme is accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists, which means the qualification is recognised by the relevant professional body and prepares you for practice as a sports therapist. You will build a rigorous grounding in the biological sciences that underpin clinical practice, including anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics, alongside the practical skills of injury assessment, massage, taping, electrotherapy, and rehabilitation programme design. The degree includes a year abroad, which broadens your professional and cultural perspective.

You will develop clinical competence alongside academic understanding, learning to work confidently with athletes and physically active clients at all levels, from recreational participants to elite performers.

The programme cultivates clinical reasoning, evidence-based practice, and the professional communication skills needed to work effectively with other healthcare professionals and with clients who are often under physical and psychological pressure from injury.

Graduates pursue careers as sports therapists in professional sports clubs, sports medicine clinics, private practice, and community sport and exercise settings. Many also work in fitness, strength and conditioning, and rehabilitation contexts. Further study in physiotherapy, sports medicine, clinical exercise science, or strength and conditioning is a well-established route for those wishing to develop specialist expertise or extend their scope of practice.
