Sports Coaching with Foundation year
Sports coaching is both an applied skill and a reflective discipline. At its best, it involves understanding not only the technical and tactical demands of a sport but also how athletes learn, how they respond to pressure, what motivates them, and how to create environments in which people develop and perform. Good coaches draw on sports science, psychology, pedagogy, and practical experience, and they adapt their approach to the athletes in front of them.
At Coventry University, this four-year full-time programme with a foundation year develops those capabilities systematically, building from foundational knowledge into advanced coaching practice.
You will study the underpinning science of sport and exercise, covering physiology, psychology, biomechanics, and performance analysis, alongside dedicated coaching modules that focus on planning, delivery, feedback, and reflective practice. The foundation year ensures that you build the academic skills and subject knowledge needed to thrive on the main programme, making this a strong choice if your prior qualifications are non-traditional or if you are returning to education after a gap. The degree includes a placement year, during which you will gain practical coaching experience in real settings, and a year abroad is also incorporated, giving you the opportunity to study or work in an international sporting environment.
Work placement opportunities are woven through the programme more broadly, so you will have multiple chances to build professional experience and develop your coaching identity before you graduate. The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points.
Graduates go into roles as coaches and performance analysts across a wide range of sports, working with community clubs, national governing bodies, schools, performance academies, and elite programmes. Physical education teaching, sports development, sports administration, and health and wellbeing roles are also common graduate destinations. Those who wish to continue their studies can progress to postgraduate programmes in coaching, sports science, or sports management.
