About this course

Sports therapy and rehabilitation is a clinical and applied discipline concerned with the prevention, assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries in sports and physically active populations. Sports therapists work alongside physiotherapists, sports medicine doctors, strength and conditioning coaches and other professionals to help athletes and active individuals recover from injury, manage pain and return to full performance. The field draws on anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, exercise science and clinical skills to deliver evidence-based treatment and rehabilitation.

The programme prepares you for professional practice in sports therapy through a combination of academic study and practical clinical skill development. You will study musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology, injury assessment and diagnosis, manual therapy techniques including massage and joint mobilisation, exercise rehabilitation and prescription, sports taping and strapping, clinical decision-making and sports medicine. Both theoretical knowledge and practical skills are assessed throughout the programme, and you will develop competence in working with clients across the range of sports and physical activity contexts. Clinical placement experience is typically integrated into the programme, giving you exposure to real patient and athlete populations.

Graduates of sports therapy and rehabilitation programmes work in professional sport as sports therapists and rehabilitation practitioners, in private sports injury clinics, leisure and fitness facilities, gyms, schools, universities and the armed forces. Many graduates also work in community health, exercise referral and musculoskeletal rehabilitation alongside physiotherapy teams. The Society of Sports Therapists is the relevant professional body, and graduates may pursue registration and continuing professional development through that route.

Postgraduate study in sports science, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning or sports medicine provides further career development options.
