Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation

Sports therapy and rehabilitation is a clinical discipline concerned with the prevention, assessment, and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries in sport and exercise contexts. Sports therapists work with athletes and physically active people to identify problems, deliver therapeutic interventions such as soft tissue treatment and exercise rehabilitation, and support safe return to activity after injury. The field draws on anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and clinical assessment, combining scientific rigour with hands-on practical skill.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this part-time programme allows you to study at a pace that fits alongside other commitments, whether that is employment, athletic training, or family life. The flexible study mode means you take fewer units per week compared to full-time study, progressing through the curriculum at a sustainable pace while still developing the knowledge and skills that professional sports therapy requires. You will study musculoskeletal anatomy, injury assessment, therapeutic modalities, exercise prescription, and the principles of sports science that underpin rehabilitation practice.

The programme develops both your clinical reasoning and your practical technique, preparing you to work in sport and exercise settings with the professional competence and ethical awareness the role demands.

Graduates go on to work as sports therapists with amateur and professional sports clubs, in private therapy clinics, at sports performance centres, and in rehabilitation settings. Many develop careers supporting athletes across a range of sports, from grassroots community sport to elite performance environments. Further professional development and advanced qualifications in areas such as sports massage, strength and conditioning, or musculoskeletal physiotherapy are natural next steps, and some graduates go on to postgraduate study in sports medicine, physiotherapy, or sports science.
