Sports Therapy with Foundation

Sports therapy is a clinical discipline concerned with the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal and sports-related injuries, helping athletes and physically active people return to their sport or occupation as quickly and safely as possible. It draws on anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and clinical assessment skills to understand how the body moves, how injuries occur, and what treatment and rehabilitation approaches promote recovery. Sports therapists work in elite sport, community sport, private clinical practice, and a range of other settings where the management of physical injury and the maintenance of physical performance are important.

At the University of Gloucestershire this four-year programme includes a foundation year for students who need additional preparation before the main curriculum. Placements are at the heart of the degree, giving you hands-on experience with top-level teams, elite athletes, and real patients across a diverse range of settings. This practical emphasis means your academic and clinical development proceed together, so that the assessment and treatment skills you learn are grounded in real clinical experience from an early stage of your training.

You will develop proficiency in sports massage, rehabilitation exercise, taping and strapping, electrotherapy modalities, and clinical assessment, alongside the theoretical knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and injury management that underpins competent practice.

Graduates of sports therapy work as sports therapists and rehabilitation practitioners in professional and community sports clubs, gyms, physiotherapy clinics, sports science and medical departments of professional sports organisations, NHS musculoskeletal services, and private clinical practice. The Society of Sports Therapists provides the professional framework for the discipline, and many graduates work toward accreditation and professional membership. Postgraduate study in physiotherapy, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, or sports science is an option for those who wish to develop additional clinical qualifications or move into more advanced specialist practice.
