About this course

Strength and conditioning is the applied science of developing athletic physical qualities, using structured exercise programming to improve an athlete's or exerciser's power, speed, strength, endurance, agility and resilience to injury. It draws on exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology and coaching science, translating scientific knowledge into practical training interventions that support performance and wellbeing. Strength and conditioning coaches work across elite sport, professional teams, community settings and clinical rehabilitation, and the profession has grown substantially as both sporting organisations and individual exercisers have recognised the value of evidence-based physical preparation.

At the University of Bedfordshire, which places its sports science provision in the UK top ten for teaching quality, this part-time programme allows you to develop expertise in strength and conditioning while managing other commitments. You will study the physiological and biomechanical principles that underpin physical training, the design and periodisation of training programmes, the assessment and monitoring of athlete performance, injury prevention and the practical skills of coaching technique and cueing. Part-time delivery makes the degree accessible to those who are already working in sport, fitness or healthcare environments, and the ability to apply academic learning to real-world practice is a significant advantage of studying alongside professional work.

Professional accreditation through bodies such as the UK Strength and Conditioning Association is a common goal for graduates working in the field. Further study in sport science, rehabilitation or coaching is also an option.
