About this course

Structural and fire safety engineering is a discipline concerned with making the built environment safe for the people who occupy it. Structural engineering examines how buildings and other structures carry loads, resist forces, and maintain integrity over time, while fire safety engineering applies scientific principles to the prevention, detection, and management of fire in buildings. The two fields are deeply interconnected: the structural performance of buildings in fire is a critical safety consideration, and the most effective approaches to fire safety are rooted in an understanding of how both fire and structure behave under extreme conditions.

At the University of Edinburgh, this four-year full-time programme addresses both disciplines together, developing your understanding of the scientific and engineering principles that underpin structural design and fire safety analysis. The programme recognises that traditional approaches to fire safety have been experience-based, while the building industry is constantly innovating in pursuit of efficiency, and it prepares you to apply modern engineering methods to both established and novel building types and materials. A year abroad is available, giving you the opportunity to study in a different engineering culture and to build international connections in a profession that operates globally.

You will study structural mechanics, fire dynamics, heat transfer, materials behaviour at elevated temperatures, and the design codes and performance-based methods used in practice.

Graduates go on to careers as structural engineers and fire safety engineers in consultancies, construction companies, fire and rescue services, research organisations, and regulatory bodies. The combination of structural and fire safety expertise is distinctive and valued in a sector that faces increasing regulatory scrutiny and the challenge of designing for sustainability without compromising safety.
