About this course

Structural engineering is the branch of civil engineering concerned with designing and analysing the load-bearing elements of buildings, bridges, and infrastructure. It is the discipline that ensures structures can withstand the forces acting on them, from the weight of their own materials and the loads they carry to wind, seismic activity, and the stresses of long-term use. Structural engineers work at the intersection of physical science and creative design, using mathematical analysis and materials knowledge to make ambitious architectural and infrastructure projects safe, efficient, and buildable.

This four-year full-time BEng at Heriot-Watt University provides a thorough grounding in the major branches of civil engineering, including materials science, geotechnics, water engineering, and transportation, with a stronger emphasis on the analysis and design skills specific to structural engineering. You will develop expertise in structural analysis, the behaviour of materials under load, and the design of structural systems in steel, concrete, timber, and composite materials. The programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, giving you substantial professional and international experience, and work placement opportunities are built in.

The degree is designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed to progress toward chartered status as a structural engineer. A typical entry tariff of 184 points applies.
