About this course

Structural engineering with architecture is concerned with the full complexity of the built environment, from the structural analysis and engineering design that makes buildings safe and stable to the architectural planning, aesthetics, and sustainability considerations that make them well-suited to their purpose and context. It is a discipline that requires both technical rigour and design awareness, and one that is increasingly important as the built environment faces the dual challenges of decarbonisation and the regeneration of ageing stock.

At Queen's University Belfast, this four-year full-time Undergraduate Masters in Structural Engineering with Architecture provides education in planning, design, construction, sustainability, energy use, aesthetics, and the rehabilitation of the built environment. You will share a common first year with other engineering pathways before specialising, developing expertise in architectural design, structures, foundations, building technology, and urban space and form. The programme also develops the skills needed to work in and manage multidisciplinary design teams, reflecting the collaborative reality of contemporary construction practice.

A year abroad is included, providing international academic and professional experience.

Graduates from structural engineering with architecture programmes are well placed across the construction and built environment professions. Structural engineering consultancies, architecture practices, building information modelling roles, project management, sustainability consultancy, and construction management are all common career pathways. The undergraduate masters qualification provides a direct route to chartered engineer status through relevant professional bodies.

Postgraduate research in structural engineering, sustainable construction, or architectural technology is also available for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or move into academic careers.

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant s…
