Sustainable Development and History
Sustainable development and history is a combination that brings together two disciplines with a great deal to say to each other. Sustainable development is concerned with how societies meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs, examining the economic, environmental, social, and political dimensions of that challenge. History examines how past societies have navigated change, resource scarcity, environmental pressure, and political conflict, providing essential context for understanding why the world looks the way it does today and what kinds of responses to sustainability challenges have worked or failed in the past.
Together, these disciplines develop a grounded, historically informed perspective on some of the most urgent questions facing contemporary society.
At the University of the Highlands and Islands, you will study both disciplines in a distinctive educational context that takes seriously the challenges and assets of Scotland's rural, island, and coastal communities, which are themselves at the forefront of many of the pressures that sustainable development addresses. The programme is delivered flexibly, allowing you to study at a pace that suits your commitments, and the curriculum draws on the region's own history and landscape as a living resource for learning. You will develop skills in critical analysis, research, and clear written communication alongside substantive knowledge of sustainability frameworks and historical inquiry.
Graduates of programmes combining sustainable development and history are well placed for careers in environmental organisations, heritage bodies, community development, local government, policy work, education, and the voluntary sector. The combination of historical perspective and sustainability literacy is increasingly valued by organisations working on climate adaptation, land use, cultural heritage, and rural development. Postgraduate study in environmental history, sustainability, heritage management, or related disciplines is also a natural progression.
