Sustainable Development and Politics
Sustainable development and politics addresses two of the most urgent and interrelated questions of our time: how can societies organise themselves to meet human needs without compromising the ecological systems they depend on, and how do political structures, power relationships, and ideologies enable or obstruct the transitions that sustainability requires? Bringing these disciplines together is not just academically coherent; it is practically essential, because sustainable development without political analysis remains naive, and politics without environmental understanding is increasingly disconnected from reality.
At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this four-year degree combines the study of sustainability with engagement in political science and governance, offering a grounding in both the ecological and social dimensions of sustainable development and the political processes through which change happens. You will examine sustainability frameworks, environmental policy, and the economics of development alongside political theory, comparative politics, and the institutions through which public decisions are made. The context of the Scottish Highlands and Islands is itself instructive: this is a region with a distinctive relationship to land, community, and resource use, and the university's embeddedness in that context gives the degree a vivid local dimension to set alongside its broader intellectual scope.
