Sustainable Development, Culture and Heritage

Sustainable development, culture, and heritage is an interdisciplinary field that examines how communities, landscapes, and identities are shaped by history and how they can be sustained and protected in the face of economic, environmental, and social change. At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this four-year full-time programme takes place in one of the most distinctive and culturally rich environments in Europe, a region where questions of development, land use, linguistic heritage, and community resilience are not abstract academic concerns but lived realities.

You will explore the theory and practice of sustainable development alongside the study of cultural heritage in its broadest sense, encompassing built heritage, natural landscapes, intangible cultural traditions, language, and community identity. The programme draws on geography, history, cultural studies, environmental policy, and heritage management, developing your ability to think critically about the relationship between past and present and to engage with the practical challenges of managing change in ways that communities can support. The Highlands and Islands setting means your study is grounded in a real and complex regional context, from the legacy of the Clearances to the challenges of renewable energy development and rural depopulation.

Graduates from programmes in this area go on to careers in heritage management, conservation bodies, local and regional government, rural development agencies, cultural tourism, community development, and the voluntary sector. Skills in research, policy analysis, community engagement, and environmental planning are all developed through the programme and valued by employers in these fields. Postgraduate study in heritage studies, sustainable development, cultural geography, or public history is also an option for those who want to specialise.
