About this course

Sustainable fashion addresses one of the most urgent challenges facing the global garment industry: how to rethink the design, production, and consumption of clothing in ways that are environmentally responsible, socially just, and economically viable in the long term. The fashion industry is one of the world's largest and most polluting, and the growing demand for sustainable alternatives requires practitioners who can combine creative design thinking with a rigorous understanding of the cultural, social, and industrial forces shaping how fashion works and how it can change.

At the University of Leeds this three-year full-time programme asks you to shift your mindset towards more ethical and sustainable practices, exploring how cultural, social, and industrial factors shape the fashion sector today and examining the positive role that sustainability can play in reimagining it. You will study fashion design and business alongside sustainability frameworks, ethical supply chain management, circular economy principles, and the social and environmental impacts of garment production. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience in the fashion industry alongside international academic exposure.

This combination of sustainability knowledge and industry experience is increasingly valued by employers across the fashion sector.

Graduates from sustainable fashion programmes work in brands, retailers, consultancies, NGOs, and fashion innovation organisations that are working to transform how clothes are designed, made, and circulated. Roles in sustainable design, supply chain management, ethical sourcing, brand strategy, communications, and fashion education are all career destinations. The programme is particularly relevant for graduates who want to work with organisations driving positive change in fashion, whether in the commercial mainstream or in the growing independent and ethical fashion sector.

Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in fashion, sustainability, or business.
