About this course

Systems engineering addresses one of the most persistent challenges in modern technology: how to design, develop and manage complex systems that involve many interacting components, disciplines and stakeholders. Where conventional engineering disciplines focus on specific physical domains, systems engineering provides the integrating layer, ensuring that all parts of a system work together as intended, that requirements are captured accurately, and that the finished system performs reliably across its operational life. It is central to projects in defence, aerospace, transport, energy and infrastructure.

At the University of Exeter, this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, giving you a thorough grounding in the engineering and scientific fundamentals before you move into the core systems engineering content. You will study the principles of systems thinking, requirements engineering, model-based design, verification and validation, and lifecycle management. The programme has been developed in close partnership with industry and with the involvement of professional engineering bodies, ensuring that what you study reflects current practice and prepares you for professional registration.

Exeter's engineering department brings research strength in areas relevant to complex systems, and the degree draws on that expertise.

Systems engineers are in demand across sectors where complexity is a defining challenge: defence and aerospace, transport and infrastructure, telecommunications, energy systems and advanced manufacturing are among the leading employers. Graduates take on roles in systems integration, requirements management, technical architecture and project engineering. The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in systems engineering, engineering management or specialist technical disciplines, and supports progression towards chartered engineer status through the relevant professional bodies.
