Technological Education

Technological education is a subject concerned with how we understand, design, and reflect on the technologies that shape human life, and with how that understanding can be taught effectively in schools. In Scotland, technological education encompasses a range of curriculum areas including design and technology, engineering science, computing, graphics, and craft and technical skills, and it is a subject that asks both practical and philosophical questions: what can we make, how do we make it, and what difference does making things make to how we live?

At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year full-time programme is designed specifically to prepare you to become a teacher of technological subjects in Scottish secondary schools. Strathclyde's location in Glasgow and its strong links with Scottish education authorities make it a natural home for this programme. You will study the technical and design content of the technological education curriculum in depth, developing your own subject knowledge and practical skills, alongside professional and pedagogical studies that prepare you for the demands of teaching.

School placements are integrated into the degree, giving you progressive experience in real classroom environments under the supervision of practising teachers.

The programme develops your ability to plan and deliver engaging and effective lessons in technological subjects, to manage a secondary classroom, to assess pupils' work accurately, and to respond to the diverse needs of learners. You will also develop a broader professional identity as an educator, understanding the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence, the values that underpin inclusive education, and your professional responsibilities as a registered teacher.

Graduation from this programme leads directly to eligibility for provisional registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland and the opportunity to complete the probationary year that leads to full registration. Technological education teachers are in demand across Scottish secondary schools, and the specialism offers a meaningful professional career with clear routes to leadership roles in schools and educational authorities. Further study in education at masters level, including the Chartered Teacher qualification, is available to those who want to develop their professional expertise over time.
