About this course

Technology and design with education is a degree that prepares you to teach design and technology in secondary schools, combining deep subject knowledge with the professional skills, values, and practical understanding that effective teaching demands. Design and technology as a school subject develops pupils' creativity, problem-solving, critical thinking, and technical skills, connecting academic learning to the made world in ways that other subjects do not. Teaching it well requires both genuine subject expertise and the ability to inspire, challenge, and support young people across a wide range of abilities and backgrounds.

At Stranmillis University College in Belfast, this four-year full-time programme integrates technology, design, and educational studies from the outset, preparing you not just with subject knowledge but with the professional capabilities that outstanding teachers possess. The programme reflects the conviction that great teachers are visionaries, lifelong learners, communicators, collaborators, innovators, and role models, and it is designed to develop all of these qualities alongside technical and subject competence. The sandwich year gives you structured professional practice in school settings, and work placement is embedded in the programme, giving you significant classroom experience before you qualify.

You will develop skills in creating positive learning environments, adapting your teaching to diverse learners, and inspiring young people to believe in themselves and maximise their potential.

Stranmillis is one of Northern Ireland's two colleges of teacher education and has decades of experience in preparing teachers for schools across the region.

Graduates qualify as post-primary teachers of technology and design, and many go on to long careers in secondary schools, subject leadership, and educational management. Others move into roles in educational development, curriculum work, training, and educational technology. The teaching qualification is recognised across the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
