Theological Studies

Theological studies is the systematic academic investigation of religious thought, tradition, text and practice. It asks fundamental questions about the nature of the divine, the origins and interpretation of sacred texts, the development of religious doctrine and the social and historical contexts in which religious communities have formed and changed. The discipline draws on philosophy, history, linguistics and the social sciences to build a rigorous and wide-ranging understanding of religion as one of the most persistent and powerful dimensions of human life and culture.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands this programme runs over four years full time, within the distinctive distributed campus model that characterises the institution and its engagement with the communities of the Scottish Highlands and Islands. You will engage with the major traditions of theological thought, with the interpretation of sacred texts, with the history of Christian theology in particular and with the comparative study of religion more broadly. The discipline requires the ability to read complex texts carefully, to analyse and evaluate arguments across centuries of theological controversy, and to engage with questions that lie at the boundary of philosophy, history and religious experience.

You will develop skills in textual analysis, philosophical reasoning, historical research and extended academic writing. The capacity to engage seriously with difficult questions about meaning, value and human experience is a transferable intellectual skill that is valued in many professional and public contexts.

Graduates from theological studies programmes pursue careers in ministry, chaplaincy, education, social work, the charitable sector, journalism, heritage and community roles, as well as in fields where ethical reasoning and an understanding of diverse cultural and religious traditions are valued. Postgraduate study in theology, religious studies, philosophy, ethics or history is a natural route for those wanting to develop specialist expertise or pursue academic careers.
