Theology and Philosophy

Theology and philosophy is a natural pairing: the two disciplines have been in conversation for millennia, and many of the most important questions they address, about the existence and nature of God, the problem of evil, the basis of ethics, and the relationship between faith and reason, can only be fully approached when you bring both to bear. Theology examines the beliefs, practices, texts, and traditions of the world's religious communities, while philosophy provides the analytical tools to evaluate claims, test arguments, and think clearly about ultimate questions.

At Birmingham Newman University, this four-year, full-time programme begins with a foundation year, which provides an accessible entry route for students who want to build their academic skills and subject familiarity before progressing to the main degree. Newman is a Catholic institution with a long tradition of engagement with both theological reflection and philosophical inquiry, and the programme reflects that tradition while also engaging broadly with the range of religious traditions and philosophical perspectives that shape contemporary thought. You will study Christian theology and its history alongside philosophy of religion, ethics, and philosophical logic, and you will engage with other world religions through the lens of both theological comparison and philosophical analysis.
