Theology and religious studies combined with politics is a pairing that addresses some of the most important and contested questions in contemporary life. Religion and politics have always been deeply intertwined: questions about authority, legitimacy, justice, war, and community cannot be answered without engaging with both. Theology and religious studies examines religion not as a world apart but as it relates to politics, history, philosophy, literature, art, and culture, as well as to personal belief and practice.

Politics provides the analytical frameworks to understand power, governance, ideology, and the structures through which societies make collective decisions. Together they develop a critically informed perspective on the forces that shape human societies.

At the University of Glasgow this four-year full-time programme draws on one of Scotland's strongest departments in theology and religious studies, where the subject is taught with both scholarly rigour and an openness to the diverse ways in which religion operates in the contemporary world. You will engage with the study of religion and religious texts alongside political theory, comparative government, and international relations. The degree includes a year abroad, broadening your understanding of how religious and political questions look in different cultural contexts.
