Theology

Theology is one of the oldest academic disciplines, concerned with the systematic and rigorous study of religious belief, scriptural texts, the history of faith communities, and the relationship between religious thought and the wider intellectual and cultural traditions of human history. Far from being narrowly devotional, academic theology asks genuinely difficult questions about how religious texts have been read and interpreted across centuries, how theological ideas have developed in dialogue with philosophy, science, and culture, and what the historical evidence tells us about the origins and early development of religious communities.

At St Andrews this four-year MTheol (Hons) programme is designed for students who wish to focus seriously on theological and biblical studies. You will study the history and literature of ancient Israel, engaging with the Hebrew Bible as both a religious and historical document. You will examine the person of Jesus of Nazareth and the diverse literature of the New Testament, including Paul's letters, and trace the rapid and complex growth of early Christianity as it spread across the Mediterranean world and entered into dialogue with Greek and Roman philosophy.

A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to study theology in an international academic context.

The masters-level qualification reflects the depth of engagement the programme demands and the advanced level at which you will be working by the time you graduate.

Graduates pursue careers in ministry and chaplaincy, education, pastoral care, journalism, publishing, the heritage sector, and academic research. The analytical, interpretive, and communicative skills that theology develops are also valued in the civil service, law, and social work. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in theology, biblical studies, or religious studies, and some pursue professional training in ministry or chaplaincy.
