About this course

Theoretical physics is the branch of physics concerned with developing the mathematical and conceptual frameworks through which we understand the fundamental nature of the universe. Where experimental physics tests hypotheses in the laboratory, theoretical physics constructs the theories that make sense of experimental results and predicts phenomena that have not yet been observed. It is the domain of quantum mechanics and relativity, of cosmology and particle physics, of the mathematical structures that describe how matter and energy behave at every scale from the subatomic to the cosmological.

Theoretical physics demands exceptional mathematical ability and a willingness to work with highly abstract ideas, and it offers the deepest engagement with the ultimate questions about the nature of reality.

At the University of Newcastle, this three-year, full-time degree takes you from classical and quantum mechanics through to the life and death of stars and the large-scale structure of the universe, building your theoretical understanding of physics in a friendly and supportive environment. You will develop strong skills in mathematical physics, problem-solving, and the ability to work with formal theoretical frameworks at an advanced level. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities, which give you the chance to develop professional skills in research, technology, or related environments alongside your academic studies.

Graduates from theoretical physics programmes are highly valued for their mathematical and analytical abilities across many sectors. Academic and industrial research, software engineering, financial modelling, data science, technology consultancy, and the civil service all recruit theoretical physicists. The combination of deep quantitative skill with the ability to construct and evaluate complex arguments is rarely matched by graduates of other disciplines.
