About this course

Theoretical physics is the branch of physics that seeks to develop the mathematical frameworks and conceptual structures through which the fundamental laws of nature can be understood. Where experimental physics tests those laws through observation and measurement, theoretical physics asks deeper questions: what is the underlying mathematical description of matter and energy, how do the laws of quantum mechanics and general relativity fit together, what happened at the earliest moments of the universe? It is a discipline that demands outstanding mathematical ability and a willingness to engage with ideas that push at the very edges of what is known.

At the University of Liverpool, this five-year programme includes a year abroad as a built-in component, distinguishing it from the standard degree and giving you the opportunity to experience theoretical physics in a different academic and international environment. The programme develops your mathematical and physical knowledge across the full range of theoretical content, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, special and general relativity, quantum field theory, and particle physics. You will develop a high level of mathematical sophistication alongside deep physical intuition, learning to construct and analyse models of physical systems with precision and rigour.

Liverpool has strong research connections to particle physics and astrophysics through its links to international experiments and observatories.

This is a full-time programme studied over five years, reflecting the depth of content and the additional year abroad.
