About this course

Theoretical physics seeks to understand the fundamental laws governing the universe, using mathematics as its primary tool. Where experimental physics tests nature directly, theoretical physics constructs models, derives predictions and explores the logical consequences of physical principles, from quantum mechanics and relativity through to cosmology, field theory and the physics of complex systems. It is a discipline that demands deep mathematical fluency and the ability to work with abstraction, and it trains a mode of thinking that is powerful far beyond physics itself.

At the University of York, this four-year programme develops your mathematical and computational skills alongside a rigorous grounding in theoretical physics. You will use mathematical analysis and a range of computational methods to address complex problems, learning to write scientific reports to professional standards and to simulate large physical systems using high-performance computing facilities. A sandwich placement year is available, allowing you to spend time in a research or industrial environment and develop your professional skills alongside your academic studies.

The programme also includes work placement opportunities, giving you experience of physics in applied settings.
