Urban Planning

Urban planning is concerned with shaping the places where people live, work, and move through their daily lives. It asks how cities and the countryside can be developed to meet human needs, support economic activity, protect the environment, and accommodate change over time. Planners work at the intersection of government, community, business, and the natural environment, making decisions that affect millions of people and that leave their mark on the landscape for generations.

At Newcastle University, this three-year full-time programme prepares you for this complex and consequential role. You will study the theory and practice of planning, including spatial policy, development management, housing, transport, environmental planning, and the regeneration of urban areas. The programme engages seriously with the full range of stakeholders that planners work with: politicians and government bodies, local communities, property developers, the renewable energy sector, environmentalists, and public health organisations.

The inclusion of a year abroad gives you the opportunity to study planning in a different national context, broadening your understanding of how different countries and cultures approach the challenge of managing land use and urban development. You will develop your ability to analyse complex situations, consult with diverse interests, and produce plans and proposals that are both technically sound and politically achievable.

Planning graduates are employed in local planning authorities, government agencies, planning consultancies, housing associations, development companies, environmental organisations, and transport bodies. The Royal Town Planning Institute accredits planning programmes and provides the professional framework for graduate development after university. With further experience and professional development, planners can progress to senior roles in spatial strategy, policy development, masterplanning, and regeneration leadership.

Postgraduate study in planning, urban design, environmental management, or housing policy is a route for those who wish to specialise further or move into research.
