Veterinary Medicine and Surgery

Veterinary medicine and surgery is one of the most demanding and rewarding of the clinical professions, combining the biological sciences of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology with the clinical skills of diagnosis, surgery, and treatment across a range of animal species. Vets work not only with companion animals and horses but with farm animals, wildlife, and laboratory species, and their role extends well beyond individual patient care to include public health, food safety, animal welfare advocacy, and conservation. The profession is uniquely placed at the intersection of animal and human health, and understanding that relationship, known as the One Health approach, is increasingly central to how veterinary medicine is practised and studied.

At the University of Glasgow, this five-year, full-time BVM&S programme is one of the UK's leading veterinary degrees, preparing you to contribute to society through the healthcare of animals raised for food, the welfare of companion and wildlife species, and research, conservation, and innovation. You will develop a comprehensive understanding of the biology and medicine of multiple species, progressing from foundational sciences through clinical training in real veterinary settings. The programme develops the clinical reasoning, technical skill, and professional judgement needed to practise safely and competently across the full range of veterinary contexts.

Graduates of veterinary medicine and surgery are eligible for registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and can practise in the UK and internationally.
