Veterinary Science

Veterinary science is one of the most demanding and rewarding degree programmes available, training you to diagnose, treat and prevent disease across a wide range of animal species while also developing a deep understanding of animal welfare, public health and the human-animal bond. The discipline draws on anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, surgery and clinical medicine, and it requires you to integrate scientific knowledge with practical clinical judgement under real conditions. Vets also play a central role in food safety and public health, monitoring zoonotic diseases and working at the intersection of animal and human medicine.

The University of Liverpool offers this five-year full-time programme, which includes a year abroad, reflecting the global nature of veterinary practice and giving you exposure to animal health systems and disease challenges in another country. Liverpool's veterinary school has a long-standing reputation and substantial clinical facilities, including a teaching hospital that sees a wide range of cases across companion animals, farm animals, equine and exotic species. The typical entry profile for this programme is around 168 UCAS tariff points, consistent with the high academic standard required for entry to a professional veterinary degree.

You will spend the early years of the programme building the underpinning sciences, moving progressively into clinical rotations where you work with real patients under the supervision of veterinary clinicians. You will develop skills in physical examination, diagnostic imaging, laboratory investigation, surgical technique and client communication, all of which are essential in professional practice.

The vast majority of veterinary science graduates enter clinical practice, working in small animal, mixed, farm, equine or exotic species settings. Beyond private practice, career paths include roles in the Animal and Plant Health Agency and other government veterinary services, the pharmaceutical and animal health industries, international development and global animal health organisations, research and academia, and military veterinary services. The degree is also a foundation for postgraduate specialist training, leading to advanced clinical qualifications in disciplines such as surgery, internal medicine, pathology and reproduction.
